Adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions
This calculator works with two fractions and any of the four operations, then automatically reduces the answer to its simplest form and shows it as a decimal and a mixed number.
How each operation works
- Add / subtract — put both over a common denominator, then combine the numerators.
- Multiply — multiply the numerators and multiply the denominators.
- Divide — flip the second fraction and multiply.
Simplifying
The result is divided by the greatest common divisor of its numerator and denominator, so ⁶⁄₈ becomes ¾. A mixed number splits an improper fraction like ⁷⁄₃ into 2 ⅓.
FAQ
Can I use negative fractions?
Yes — put the minus sign on the numerator. The calculator keeps the denominator positive and carries the sign through correctly.
Is the fraction calculator free, and does my input stay private?
Yes — it's free with no sign-up, and all the math runs in your browser, so nothing you type is sent to a server. You can use it as often as you like.
Does it automatically reduce the answer?
Yes. Every result is divided by the greatest common divisor of its numerator and denominator, so it always appears in lowest terms — for example ⁶⁄₈ is shown as ¾. You also get the decimal and mixed-number forms alongside it.
Can it handle improper fractions and mixed numbers?
Yes. You can enter improper fractions like ⁷⁄₃, and the calculator shows the result both as an improper fraction and as a mixed number (2 ⅓), so you get whichever form you need.
What happens if I divide by zero?
A fraction with a zero denominator is undefined, and dividing by a zero-valued fraction is too. The calculator flags this rather than returning a wrong answer, so check that no denominator is left at zero.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. It's fully responsive and works in any mobile browser, making it handy for homework or quick recipe-scaling math on the go.
