How reading time is estimated

Reading time is simply the number of words divided by your reading speed in words per minute (wpm). Paste your text and the tool counts the words automatically, then multiplies by your chosen speed to estimate how long it takes to read. You can also skip the text box and type a word count directly — handy when you already know the length, like a 1,500-word article.

What reading speed should I use?

Adult silent reading speed varies, but research clusters around an average of roughly 238 words per minute for general, non-technical prose. Use the presets as a guide:

  • 150 wpm — slower, careful reading, or dense/technical material.
  • 238 wpm — a solid average for everyday reading.
  • 300 wpm — fast, fluent readers skimming familiar topics.
  • 450 wpm — trained speed readers (comprehension usually drops at this pace).

Reading speed also depends on the material: a novel reads faster than a legal contract, and reading on screen is often slightly slower than on paper.

Reading vs. reading aloud

We also show a “read aloud” estimate at about 130 wpm, the comfortable pace of clear spoken delivery. This is the number you want when timing a speech, a podcast script, a voiceover, or a presentation — speaking is much slower than silent reading, so a 5-minute read can be a 9-minute talk.

Why content sites show reading times

The “4 min read” label you see on blogs and articles is calculated exactly this way. It sets reader expectations up front, which tends to improve engagement — people are more likely to start something when they know it’s short.

FAQ

How is a “word” counted?

We count groups of characters separated by spaces or line breaks, which matches how word counts work in most word processors closely enough for a time estimate.

Is my pasted text stored?

No. The text is processed in your browser and never sent anywhere.

Is the reading time calculator free to use?

Yes, it's completely free with no sign-up and no limit on how much text you can paste or how many estimates you can run.

What reading speed do most blogs use for "X min read"?

Most "X min read" labels assume somewhere between 200 and 250 words per minute, with around 238 wpm being a well-supported average for adult silent reading. This tool defaults to that range and lets you adjust the speed to match your audience.

Can I estimate speaking time for a speech or video?

Yes. The tool also shows a read-aloud estimate at about 130 words per minute, the comfortable pace of clear spoken delivery. Use that figure when timing a speech, podcast script, voiceover, or presentation, since speaking is much slower than silent reading.

Does it count words the same way as my word processor?

Closely. It counts groups of characters separated by spaces or line breaks, which matches how most word processors tally words well enough for a time estimate. Small differences can occur with hyphenated terms or unusual punctuation, but they won't meaningfully change the result.
