How to calculate a tip

A tip is a percentage of your bill. To work it out by hand you multiply the bill by the tip rate — for example, 18% of a $50 bill is 50 × 0.18 = $9, making the total $59. This calculator does that instantly and then divides the total by the number of people so you know exactly what each person owes. Enter the bill, choose a tip percentage (or tap one of the preset buttons), set how many people are splitting, and the results update as you type.

How much should you tip?

Tipping norms vary by country and service, but in the United States a useful rule of thumb is:

  • 15% — standard for acceptable sit-down service.
  • 18–20% — good to very good service; 20% is the common default today.
  • 25%+ — exceptional service, or small bills where a larger percentage is fair.

For counter service, coffee, and takeaway, tipping is optional and usually smaller. When in doubt, 20% is a safe, generous default that’s easy to calculate.

Tipping on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Etiquette guides generally say it’s fine to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, but many people simply tip on the total shown — the difference is small. This tool applies your tip percentage to the bill amount you enter, so enter whichever figure you prefer to tip on.

Splitting the bill fairly

Dividing the grand total evenly is the simplest approach and what this calculator does. If people ordered very differently, you may prefer to split the actual items and only share the tip and tax evenly — but for most casual meals, an even split is quick and fair.

FAQ

Does it round each person’s share?

Amounts are shown to the cent. When an even split doesn’t divide perfectly, rounding each share to the cent may differ from the grand total by a penny or two — easily settled at the table.

Can I use a different currency?

The math is identical for any currency; only the symbol differs.

Does it tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

It applies your tip percentage to whatever bill amount you enter. Etiquette generally allows tipping on the pre-tax subtotal, but the difference is small, so enter the figure you prefer to tip on.

How much should I tip?

In the United States, 15% is standard for acceptable sit-down service, 18–20% for good service (20% is the common default today), and 25% or more for exceptional service. For counter service and takeaway, tipping is optional and usually smaller.

Is the tip calculator free, and is my data private?

Yes to both. It is free with no sign-up, and the math runs entirely in your browser, so the bill amounts you enter are never uploaded or stored.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes. The calculator is responsive and works in any phone browser, so you can split a bill and figure the tip right at the table.
