How old is my cat in human years?
Like dogs, cats don't age at a steady "seven years per year." They grow up fast and then settle into a slower, steadier pace. This calculator uses the standard veterinary mapping to convert your cat's age into the human-equivalent age, which is a far better guide to their life stage and care needs.
How it's calculated
- Year 1 ≈ 15 human years — a one-year-old cat is roughly a 15-year-old.
- Year 2 brings them to about 24.
- Every year after adds about 4 human years. So a 5-year-old cat is around 36, and a 10-year-old is about 56.
Indoor vs. outdoor
The aging rate is similar, but lifespan differs a lot. Indoor cats commonly live 13–17 years and often into their early twenties, while outdoor cats face more risks (traffic, predators, disease) and typically live shorter lives. Either way, cats are living longer than they used to thanks to better nutrition and veterinary care.
Caring for an aging cat
Once a cat reaches the "mature" and "senior" stages (around 7+), more frequent vet visits help catch common age-related issues early — kidney disease, dental problems, arthritis, and thyroid changes. Watch for shifts in weight, appetite, thirst, and litter-box habits.
FAQ
When is a cat considered "senior"?
Vets generally call cats mature at 7–10, senior at 11–14, and geriatric at 15 and older. Many cats reach these milestones in great health with the right care.
Does breed change the result?
Far less than with dogs — cats vary little in size, so the same mapping works across breeds. Genetics and lifestyle affect lifespan more than aging rate.
How accurate is the human-age conversion?
It is a well-established veterinary approximation, not an exact science. Individual cats age at slightly different rates depending on genetics, diet, and health, so treat the result as a useful guide to life stage rather than a precise figure.
Can I enter my cat's age in months?
For kittens under a year, you can estimate using fractions of a year, since the first year covers a large jump in human-equivalent age. A 6-month-old kitten is roughly equivalent to a 10-year-old child.
Is this cat age calculator free to use?
Yes, it is completely free with no sign-up, and you can check as many cats as you like.
Does it work on my phone, and is my data private?
It runs entirely in your browser and works on phones, tablets, and computers. Nothing you enter is uploaded or stored on a server.
