How old is my dog in human years?
The old rule that "one dog year equals seven human years" is a myth. Dogs mature very quickly in their first couple of years and then age more gradually — and bigger breeds age faster than small ones. This calculator uses the size-adjusted method that veterinarians prefer, so the result is far closer to reality than multiplying by seven.
How it's calculated
- Year 1 ≈ 15 human years — a one-year-old dog is roughly a 15-year-old teenager.
- Year 2 adds about 9 more, so a two-year-old dog is around 24.
- Each year after that adds 4–7 human years depending on size: about 4 for small breeds, 5 for medium, 6 for large, and 7 for giant breeds.
Why size matters
It's one of the curiosities of dogs: small breeds live longer and age more slowly, while giant breeds have shorter lifespans and reach "senior" status earlier. A Great Dane may be considered senior by 6, while a Chihuahua of the same age is still firmly middle-aged. That's why choosing the right size band gives a much better estimate than a single formula for all dogs.
Life stages
Knowing your dog's human-equivalent age helps with care: puppies need frequent feeding and vaccinations, adults need steady exercise and weight management, and seniors benefit from more frequent vet checks, joint support, and diet adjustments.
FAQ
Is there a single "scientific" formula?
A 2019 study proposed human_age ≈ 16 × ln(dog_age) + 31 based on DNA methylation, which works well for many breeds but was derived mainly from Labradors. The size-adjusted method used here reflects the real differences between small and giant breeds, which a single formula can't.
My dog is a mix — which size do I pick?
Choose the band that matches your dog's adult weight. Weight is the best predictor of aging rate, regardless of exact breed.
Is this dog age calculator free?
Yes, it is completely free with no sign-up, and the calculation runs in your browser so nothing about your pet is uploaded or stored. Use it as often as you like.
Why isn't one dog year equal to seven human years?
The seven-year rule is an oversimplification. Dogs reach the equivalent of about 15 human years in their first year and 24 by their second, then age 4–7 human years annually depending on size, so a flat multiplier badly overstates a puppy's age and understates a small senior dog's.
At what age is my dog a senior?
It depends on size: giant breeds may be senior by around age 6, large breeds by 7–8, and small breeds not until 10 or later. Earlier senior status is why bigger dogs benefit from vet checkups sooner.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes, the calculator is responsive and works on phones, tablets, and desktops, so you can check your dog's human-equivalent age anywhere.
