What is an NBI Clearance?
An NBI Clearance is a certificate from the National Bureau of Investigation confirming you have no pending criminal case or derogatory record in the Philippines. It's one of the most commonly requested documents for local employment, overseas work, business permits, and many government transactions. This checker shows the requirements, estimated fee, and steps for your specific situation — first-time or renewal, here in the Philippines or abroad.
How much does an NBI Clearance cost?
The standard fee is ₱130 for the clearance plus a ₱25 e-payment service fee, about ₱155 total. Under the First Time Jobseekers Assistance Act (RA 11261), first-time job seekers can get one free NBI clearance by presenting a Barangay First-Time Jobseeker Certificate. Tick that option in the checker to see the fee-waived requirements. The fee is now unified regardless of purpose (local employment, travel abroad, etc.), and an NBI clearance is valid for one year from the date of issue.
First-time application vs. renewal
A first-time application requires online registration, an appointment, and a visit to an NBI branch for biometrics (fingerprints and photo). A renewal is faster: if your previous clearance was issued in 2014 or later, you can usually use the online Quick Renewal service, skip the appointment and biometrics, and have the clearance delivered by courier.
Applying from abroad
If you're an OFW or living overseas, first-time applicants generally need a completed fingerprint card taken at the embassy, consulate, or local police, since biometrics can't be captured online. Renewals from abroad can often be done fully online with international courier delivery. You can also authorize a representative in the Philippines through a notarized Special Power of Attorney (SPA).
How long does it take?
If there's no "hit" — no name match against existing records — the clearance is often released the same day as your appointment. A "hit" means your name matches someone in the database (it doesn't mean you have a record), and it can add a few days for manual verification.
FAQ
What IDs are accepted?
Common valid IDs include passport, PhilSys national ID, driver's license, UMID, PRC ID, postal ID, voter's ID, and others. Bring at least one — having a second on hand is wise in case the first isn't accepted.
Is the online appointment required?
Yes for first-time applicants — registration and appointment are done at the official site, clearance.nbi.gov.ph. Online renewals can skip the appointment if you're eligible.
Are these fees official?
The fees shown are indicative and based on the standard NBI rates. Fees and procedures can change, so always confirm on the official NBI Clearance website before applying. Avoid third-party "fixer" sites that charge extra.
