Convert salary to hourly (and back)
Comparing a salaried job offer to hourly work — or a freelance rate to a full-time salary — means putting them in the same units. This calculator converts an annual salary to an hourly wage, or an hourly wage to an annual salary, and breaks the figure down by month, week, and day.
The math
- Annual → hourly: salary ÷ (hours per week × weeks per year). At the standard 40 hours over 52 weeks, that's 2,080 hours a year — so a $60,000 salary is about $28.85 an hour.
- Hourly → annual: wage × hours per week × weeks per year.
Adjusting the hours-per-week and weeks-per-year inputs lets you model part-time schedules or unpaid time off.
Why the comparison isn't apples-to-apples
A salary and an hourly rate can pay the "same" on paper yet differ a lot in practice:
- Paid time off: salaried roles are usually paid for holidays and vacation; pure hourly work often isn't. Lower the weeks-per-year to reflect unpaid time.
- Overtime: hourly workers may earn extra beyond 40 hours; many salaried roles don't.
- Benefits: health insurance, retirement matching, and bonuses can be worth thousands and aren't captured by the wage alone.
FAQ
Is this gross or take-home pay?
Gross — before taxes and deductions. Your actual take-home will be lower. For a net figure, use a paycheck or take-home pay calculator for your country.
What should I use for weeks per year?
Use 52 for a job with paid vacation. For contract or hourly work where time off is unpaid, subtract your expected unpaid weeks (e.g. 48–50).
How many work hours are in a year?
At the standard full-time schedule of 40 hours a week over 52 weeks, a year has 2,080 working hours. The calculator uses your hours-per-week and weeks-per-year inputs, so you can change them to model part-time schedules or unpaid time off.
Can it convert hourly back to an annual salary?
Yes, it works both directions. Enter an hourly wage to see the equivalent annual salary, or enter a salary to see the hourly rate, with monthly, weekly, and daily breakdowns either way.
Does my salary data stay private?
Yes. The figures you enter are processed entirely in your browser and are never sent to a server or stored anywhere.
Is the salary-to-hourly calculator free?
Yes, it's free with no sign-up and works on mobile and desktop. It shows gross pay before taxes, so treat it as a comparison tool rather than a payslip.
