How to register with SSS
The Social Security System (SSS) provides social insurance to private-sector workers, the self-employed, voluntary members, and OFWs — covering sickness, maternity, disability, retirement, and more. The first step is getting your SS number, which is free and can be done online at sss.gov.ph. This checker shows what you need and the steps based on your membership type.
Membership types
- Employed — your employer reports you and shares the contribution cost.
- Self-employed — you choose your salary credit and pay your own contributions.
- Voluntary / non-working spouse — you continue contributing on your own to stay covered.
- OFW — overseas workers can register and pay from abroad.
One SS number for life
You should only ever have one SS number, and it stays with you even if you change jobs or membership type. If you were previously employed, you likely already have one — log in to My.SSS rather than registering again. Having multiple SS numbers can cause problems with your contributions and benefits.
FAQ
Is there a fee to register?
No. Getting an SS number and creating a My.SSS account are free. You only pay your monthly contributions, which build up your benefits.
I'm already employed — do I still register?
You need an SS number, but your employer handles reporting you as an employee. If you don't have a number yet, register online first, then give the number to your employer.
Can I register fully online?
Yes, you can generate your SS number and activate your My.SSS account online. Some transactions may later require visiting a branch, but initial registration is online.
