What is a business day?

A business day (or working day) is any weekday — Monday through Friday — when offices, banks, and courier services normally operate. Weekends are excluded. This calculator works two ways: count the business days between two dates, or start from a date and add (or subtract) a number of business days to land on a working date.

Why count business days instead of calendar days?

Most deadlines that matter run on business days, not calendar days. Shipping estimates ("delivered in 5 business days"), payment terms ("net 30 business days"), notice periods, and legal or contractual windows usually skip weekends — and often holidays too. Counting calendar days would put the deadline on a Saturday when nothing actually happens, so business-day math gives you the real date.

How the two modes work

  • Count between dates: the tool walks each day after the start date through the end date and tallies only the weekdays. A Monday-to-Friday span is 4 business days; add the weekend and a full week is still 5.
  • Add business days: starting from your date, it steps forward one day at a time, skipping Saturdays and Sundays, until it has counted the number you entered. Enter a negative number to count backwards.

A note on public holidays

This calculator skips weekends but does not automatically remove public holidays, because those differ by country, region, and year. If your deadline must also exclude holidays, count how many fall within the span and subtract them, or add that many extra business days to your target. Always check whether your specific agreement counts holidays as business days.

FAQ

Does "5 business days from Monday" include that Monday?

No — the count starts the next working day. Five business days from a Monday lands on the following Monday (Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri, then Mon), assuming no holidays.

Can I count backwards to find a start date?

Yes. In "add business days" mode, enter a negative number to find the working date a given number of business days before your date — useful for working out when to send something so it arrives on time.

Does this tool account for public holidays?

No — it only skips weekends. Public holidays vary by country, region, and year, so they are not removed automatically. If your deadline excludes holidays, subtract the number that fall within the span or add that many extra business days to your target date.

Is it free, and does my data stay private?

Yes on both counts. The calculator is free with no sign-up, and every date calculation runs entirely in your browser, so the dates you enter never leave your device.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. The calculator is fully responsive and works in any mobile browser, so you can check a business-day deadline on your phone without installing anything.

If the start date falls on a weekend, is it counted?

No. Only Monday through Friday are tallied, so a Saturday or Sunday start date contributes zero business days itself; counting begins from the next weekday.
