Counting the days between two dates
Enter a start date and an end date and this tool shows the gap three ways: as a total number of days, as weeks and leftover days, and as a calendar span of years, months, and days. The order doesn’t matter — if your end date is earlier than your start date, we simply measure the span between them. Everything is calculated in your browser using local time, so the numbers line up with an ordinary calendar.
“Include the end date” explained
By default we count the days between the two dates. For example, from the 1st to the 4th is 3 days. But sometimes you want to count both endpoints — counting hotel nights, billing cycles, or “how many days am I on holiday” often means including the last day. Tick Include the end date and we add one to the total so both the start and end day are counted.
Days, weeks, and the calendar span
The day total is the most precise figure. The weeks-and-days breakdown just splits that total into groups of seven. The years/months/days span is different: it counts whole calendar months and years, borrowing days from the previous month when needed — the same way you’d work out an age. Because months differ in length, a 45-day gap might show as “1 month, 14 days” or “1 month, 15 days” depending on which months it crosses.
Typical uses
- Working out the length of a trip, lease, or contract.
- Counting days since an event, purchase, or last service.
- Checking notice periods, returns windows, or warranty lengths.
- Measuring how long until a future deadline.
FAQ
Are weekends and holidays excluded?
No — this counts every calendar day, including weekends and public holidays. It is not a business-days calculator.
How do I count down to a single future date instead?
Use the how many days until a date tool, which compares a date to today automatically.
Does the order of the dates matter?
No. If the end date is earlier than the start date, the tool simply measures the span between them, so you always get a positive day count regardless of which date you enter first.
How are leap years handled?
They are counted automatically. The calculation uses real calendar dates, so February 29 in a leap year is included in the day total whenever the span crosses it.
Is it free, and does my data stay private?
Yes to both. The tool is free with no sign-up, and all calculations run in your browser using local time, so the dates you enter never leave your device.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes. It is fully responsive and works in any phone or tablet browser, with native date pickers on most devices for quick entry.
