Converting a GPA to a percentage
A GPA (grade point average) and a percentage grade measure the same thing on different scales, so there's no single universal formula to convert between them — each school sets its own mapping. This calculator uses the widely-recognised US 4.0-scale conversion table, where a 4.0 corresponds to roughly 93–100%, a 3.0 to about 83–86%, and so on. If you enter a 5.0 or 10.0 scale GPA, it's first normalised to the 4.0 scale, then converted.
The standard 4.0 conversion table
- A (93–100%) = 4.0
- A− (90–92%) = 3.7
- B+ (87–89%) = 3.3
- B (83–86%) = 3.0
- B− (80–82%) = 2.7
- C (73–76%) = 2.0
- D (63–66%) = 1.0
- F (below 60%) = 0.0
The calculator interpolates between these points so any GPA maps to a sensible percentage.
Why your school's number may differ
Some schools use a straight linear conversion (GPA ÷ scale × 100), others use weighted scales for honors and AP courses, and international systems differ again. For applications, transcripts, or anything official, always use the conversion your own institution publishes — this tool is for a quick, approximate estimate.
FAQ
Is GPA ÷ 4 × 100 a valid conversion?
It's a rough shortcut, but it tends to understate real percentages — a 3.0 GPA is usually about 84%, not 75%. The table method this calculator uses reflects how most US schools actually map grades.
How do I convert a weighted (5.0) GPA?
Select the 5.0 scale and the calculator normalises it to a 4.0 equivalent first. Note that weighted GPAs reward harder courses, so the percentage is an approximation of unweighted performance.
Can I convert a percentage back to GPA?
Yes — match your percentage to the bands above. For example, 88% falls in the B+ band, which is a 3.3 GPA on the 4.0 scale.
