How GPA is calculated

Your grade point average is a weighted average: courses worth more credit hours count more toward your GPA. For each course you multiply its grade points by its credit hours to get “quality points,” add those up across all courses, and divide by the total credit hours:

GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ(credits)

Add a row for each course, choose its letter grade and credit hours, and the GPA updates as you go. The result panel also shows your total credits and total quality points so you can see the pieces of the calculation.

The 4.0 grade scale

This calculator uses the standard unweighted US scale:

  • A / A+ = 4.0 · A− = 3.7
  • B+ = 3.3 · B = 3.0 · B− = 2.7
  • C+ = 2.3 · C = 2.0 · C− = 1.7
  • D+ = 1.3 · D = 1.0 · D− = 0.7
  • F = 0.0

Note that on the standard 4.0 scale, an A+ is usually capped at 4.0 — the same as an A. Some schools use a 4.3 (or 4.33) scale where A+ is higher, and “weighted” GPAs add extra points for honors or AP/IB courses. If your school does either, your official GPA may differ slightly from this estimate.

A worked example

Say you took three courses: an A (4.0) worth 3 credits, a B+ (3.3) worth 4 credits, and an A− (3.7) worth 3 credits. Quality points = (4.0×3) + (3.3×4) + (3.7×3) = 12 + 13.2 + 11.1 = 36.3. Total credits = 10. GPA = 36.3 ÷ 10 = 3.63.

FAQ

What counts as a credit hour?

Usually the number of hours a class meets per week over a semester — most courses are 3 or 4 credits. Use the credit values from your transcript or syllabus.

How do I figure my cumulative GPA across semesters?

Enter every course from all semesters into the list — because GPA is weighted by credits, adding them all together gives your cumulative GPA directly.

Are pass/fail courses included?

Typically no — pass/fail and audited courses usually don’t carry grade points, so leave them out.

Does this handle weighted or honors/AP GPAs?

No — it uses the standard unweighted 4.0 scale, where an A+ caps at 4.0. Schools that add extra points for honors, AP, or IB courses, or that use a 4.3 scale, will report a slightly different number, so check your school's official scale if it differs.

Is the GPA Calculator free to use?

Yes, it is completely free with no sign-up. Add as many courses and semesters as you need and the GPA updates instantly as you type.

Does my grade data stay private?

Yes. The entire calculation runs in your browser, so the grades and credit hours you enter are never uploaded or saved to a server.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes. The calculator is responsive and works in any phone or tablet browser, so you can check your GPA on the go.
